Government and The Law
Learning Objective: - To understand how our City and County governments function, what problems they have and how they solve them, what community leaders can do to improve or help these governments. How these governments interface with or are impacted by the state and federal governments.
- To understand the levels of legal systems that exist in Springfield, what their jurisdictions are, how they work, and what their problems are. To understand the various levels of law enforcement that exist in the Springfield area, how they interact with each other, and the legal system.
- The success of planning the Program Day depends on BALANCE. Balance between the areas of Learning Objectives and Current Affairs. Balance between lecture/discussion, learning by doing, and seeing.
At the end of the program day, participants should have an understanding of, and be able to answer the following questions. How the information is presented and the individuals involved in the presentations are up to the creativity of the planning team.
Government - How do City and County governments function?
- How do they differ in structure, and management? How do they derive their power? How are they financed?
- In what ways do City and County governments cooperate? Where are they in conflict? In what areas are they working for additional cooperation?
- What is a charter form of county government? What would it mean for Greene County? How would it be achieved? Is a charter form of county government necessary and desirable at this time?
Legal & Law Enforcement - What are the similarities and differences between the levels of legal systems that exist in the Springfield area?
- What are the similarities and differences in their jurisdictions?
- What are the law enforcement agencies that are present in the Springfield area?
Current Affairs
Are there items of current interest that have not been addressed in the Learning Objective? Identify any current affairs and include them in program day planning.
Education/History of Springfield
Learning Objective: - To achieve an understanding of higher education, including how to finance that education.
- To understand the different types of education that exist and their particular advantages. To understand how to research the different types of education.
- To understand the costs of a private education. To understand how education providers are funded (taxes, etc.).
- To understand how Springfield developed in the past, how it is developing now, and how it should develop in the future. To understand current development efforts, their basis, problems, goals, and successes.
